Free or Paid Web Hosting?

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Just finished your first website? So it’s the time to look for some hosting and make a choise. Your first qustion probably will be whether to choose free or paid hosting service. Let’s have a look at some advantages and disadvantages of these solutions.

Free web hosting:

(+) It’s for free. You don’t need to pay for domain name.

(-) Your URL will be something like username.freehost.com or freehost.com/username. As I noticed above, the advantage is that you don’t need to pay for domain. But note that if you move your website to another provider in the future you can loose some or all your traffic (there are some solutions how to solve this problem but it is not the point of this article).

(-) Your provider will probably include ads to your pages - usually 1 or 2 banners, sometimes popup windows. If you plan to use banner exchange on your site read carefully their Terms and conditions. Some free hosts doesn’t allow it.

(-) Free hosts usually allow lower bandwidth then paid hosts and a lot of them don’t offer futures like PHP and MySQL.

(-) A lot of free hosts change their Terms and conditions during some time. If your free host offers hosting wihtout ads now, don’t be surprised when banner or popup appears on your site in the future.

(-) Sometimes happens that free hosts cancel their free service and longer offer paid hosting only. In this case you have only 2 choises - pay them or loose your website.

Paid web hosting:

(+) You can host your own domain. If you decide to change the web hosting provider in the future, you easily transfer the domain to the new provider and don’t loose your traffic.

(+) Most paid hosts offer 24/7 support via email or live chat and some of them provide toll-free phone support.

(+) You can expect better uptime then on free host. Some paid hosts offer uptime guarantee.

(+) Paid hosts usually offer enough disk space and bandwidth. Futures like PHP and MySQL are standard. Even if you are not programmer you can download plenty of free PHP scripts from internet.

(-) Paid hosting cost money :o)

Before you make the decision if choose free or paid host you should answer this question: How big ambitions do I have with my website? If you are starting small personal page for your friends consist of a few *.html files then free host will be sufficient. In case you plan to run serious business website, need PHP, database and don’t want ads on the site I recommend to look for quality paid host.

Getting Traffic To Your Website

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Having links to your website is essential for any online marketer or webmaster looking for a way to get their website noticed. There are several benefits to having links:

1) It increases your ranking in Search engines. Search engines like Google and Yahoo use link popularity to valuate the ranking of a particular website. For instance Google has a toolbar that people can download onto their computer and it shows the page ranking of every website you visit. Link popularity plays a major role when Google computes this page ranking for these websites. Websites you can use to check the link popularity of your website includes: www.Alexa.com www.marketleap.com

2) You can drive traffic to your website. This is a great way to receive targeted traffic for your product or services. Somebody sees your link on a website relevant to yours and then clicks on it and instantly becomes a targeted visitor. Not all traffic you’re going to receive is going to come from search engines and you should not just rely on this type of traffic because despite what some individuals claim, high ranking cannot be guaranteed and no one knows the precise algorithms such search engines use. Not to mention that they are always continually changing. The goal is to bring traffic to your site and influence them to continually revisit.

3) Link building also builds credibility. When people consistently see your name and link it builds up brand awareness and makes you seem like an expert within your field. Even though link building is a great way to get your website noticed there are many things you have to be careful of. Search engines are very savy when it comes to checking the legitimacy of websites. Link spamming and any other sort of illegal tactics will negatively effect your website. Therefore it is very important to not to follow programs that promise you thousands of links and etc. I remember reading a comment by someone who was using one of the popular link building services and they said that their link popularity actually decreased as a result of them using the service.

Another thing to consider is that not every link is the same or at least not in the eye of the search engines. There are basically two types of links search engines play importance to. One is reciprocal links and the other is one-way links. Reciprocal links is basically when you and another website owner exchange links. Thus the term reciprocal. These terms are considered good if your exchanging links with someone who has a website relevant to yours. One-way links is just what it sounds like a one-way link pointing back to your site. Search engines give this the most importance because they consider that a website must be of some value if they have other websites pointing to them. So, in a sense one-way links give you some sort of cyberspace credibility. Anchor text also plays an importance. Anchor text is the text that is referenced when a link is clicked on. For instance:, “NBA GOODS”, is a link to a NBA store. The text NBA Goods is the anchor text that points to the link of the NBA store. Search engines are favorable to anchor text because it can provide some sense or relevancy to your link and gives your link some importance because someone took time out to write text for your links. A link services that I recommend for people to try is at http://www.submission.hiifii.com/. This is not an affiliate link nor do I receive commissions for referring them but through reviewing their website I think they’re a new service on the up and coming.

One thing that impresses me about their service is that they have a list of all the directories they submit to with a Google page ranking value for each. In addition to, they don’t submit to all the directories within one day or 24 hours like some services but actually submits them manually, which gives about a week or two for your submission to be completed. They also allow I believe up to 5 different anchor texts for rotation. Directory submitting is good and recommended so you wont have to worry about any ill effects to your link popularity. Building links is needed for any website owner and is one of the methods SEO firms utilize, so as you see, receiving great traffic is not easy but yet if you persist eventually you will reap the rewards.

How to Use Social Bookmarking Sites to Your Advantage

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

I’ve been getting really excited lately about the whole social bookmarking trend in internet marketing. This is because I’m on a traffic kick, testing out new things to bring my website more traffic - something all webmasters want to do.

Social bookmarking is one of the top techniques that you can use to promote your website and build more traffic. If you’re not involved, it’s time to get with the program!

Social bookmarking started for me when I joined a few of the top social bookmarking sites. You may think this is all you need to do to get involved, but trust me - there is more to social bookmarking than simply joining the social bookmarking circles!

The first thing to do is visit a few of the top social bookmarking sites: Digg, del.ici.ous, Furl, and Yahoo, just for example. You can do a Google search for these to find them if you’ve never been there before.

Then, sign up for a free account with each of these. When signing up for an account, you will have the opportunity to select buttons that you can add to the end of each of your blog posts. This will allow readers of your blog to “Digg” your post over at the Digg social bookmarking site.

When someone clicks on your Digg button, it will bring them to the Digg site, where they would login with their account username and password. The blog post or article would then appear as a URL, and the person who clicked “Digg” will have the opportunity to post a comment about your post.

This can do nothing but good things for your website. If everyone gives your post a Digg, think of all the links in Digg you will have pointing back to your site. This will certainly increase your traffic when someone goes onto Digg looking for a post on a topic that interests them.

This is where I initially went wrong in my social bookmarking efforts. You don’t want to stop after just joining these social bookmarking sites and leaving a button on your blog posts for everyone else to find and click. You want to get actively involved in the social bookmarking process by becoming an active member of these sites.

What I mean by being “active” is that you want to visit these sites, and find topics of interest to you, or topics that relate to your online business. Once you find other posts on your topic of interest, then you have the opportunity to bookmark, or “favourite” those posts, and add a comment.

Doing this can really increase your traffic, as evidenced by my own increasing website stats just by doing this one thing alone. If you “favourite” other people’s sites and they “favourite” your site and you each comment on other’s posts, then you will soon have a network of links pointing back to your site.

This important piece of the social bookmarking puzzle is something I didn’t even realize myself until I got involved with my latest social bookmarking site called “Squidoo”. Apparently, Google just loves Squidoo at the moment, so I jumped on the bandwagon along with others I know joining the site.

The great thing about Squidoo and sites like MySpace is that you can create a “lens” which is just like a mini web page, or landing page that gives visitors to that lens a quick overview of what you have to offer. This will hopefully entice them to click your links and bring you more traffic.

I’ve made darn sure this time that after creating my lens I did not just leave it at that. I have visited other lenses on my topic of interest, added those lenses to my “favourites” list, and sent comments to others in hopes that others will visit my links as well. So far, this has increased my traffic very quickly and I may even reach a personal goal thanks to this technique alone!

Next, I am going to try creating more than one lens and link one to the other, which will hopefully entice visitors to read one of my lenses, and then click on to the other, increasing my traffic even more!

The thing to watch out for when using social bookmarking sites is that you don’t want to be a spammer who is out there just to get your links seen and clicked. As with anything in internet marketing, like forum posts, no one likes someone who is just there to advertise themselves. You want to offer valuable information, and make a valuable contribution by offering good advice, and great content.
